California One: The Pacific Coast Highway

Get it if you can!
In 1986 I made a 10,000 mile auto trip from Florida across the country. I fell in love with California - the people, the landscapes, the golden sunlight, and the attitudes. A short time after my trip I came across this wonderful book at a local bookstore. It has been one of the best book purchases I have ever made. The photographs capture the essence of the same California that I fell in love with. To this day, when I open this book my senses come alive with the smell, feel, sounds, and sights of one of the most unique highways I have had the priviledge to drive. This is a wonderful book and still one of my all-time favorites! I am now at this site looking for other works by Mr. Wilkes and certainly hope I can find more of his wonderful work. If anyone is aware of other published works please notify me. Thanks.

California Parks Access: A Complete Guide to the State and National Parks for Visitors With Limited Mobility
Published in Paperback by Cougar Pass Pub Co (April, 1992)
Authors: Linda Mitchell and Allen Mitchell
Average review score:

A must-have guide to read ahead and take with you.
I never realized how much (and how little) our state parks have to offer those of us who have mobility limitations. The Mitchell's have taken the time to visit every park in their book - and it shows. I was especially impressed with the detailed descriptions of trails and points of interest. Now I have a very good idea of whether I will be able to enjoy each park. Most importantly, I know which parks I do not want to miss. Thanks for your efforts and awareness of the needs of wheelchair users and others with limitations.

California Politics & Government: A Practical Approach
Published in Paperback by International Thomson Publishing (December, 1996)
Authors: Larry N. Gerston and Terry Christensen
Average review score:

Practical and Enjoyable
I've got the latest, sixth edition of this book, and I am very impressed. Relevant, well-organized, and very-well written, this book is a firt-rate primer for those interested in California politics. The book is written in the style I appreciate the most: to the point and matter-of-fact, without needless theorizing and editorializing.

This is not an ordinary textbook. It is not boring or pedantic. Gerston and Christensen present a fascinating panorama of California politics. The book has ten chapters, each of which contains valuable insights and interesting details. The authors completely succeeded in presenting factual information, including tables and graphs, in a way that does not overwhelm the reader or make him want to skip over these things. This masterful integration of factual information into the flow of the narrative makes the book truly enjoyable.

I have a Ph.D. in Political Science; and I rely on information from this book when I get ready to lecture on California politics in my American Government and Politics course in the college I teach. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to get acquainted with California politics. And even advanced students of the subject, will find the up-to-date information in this book a valuable tool for understanding California's politics and society. Pick up this awesome resource today.

California Pop-Up Book
Published in Hardcover by Universe Books (June, 2003)
Authors: Los Angeles County Museum of Art and L A County Museum
Average review score:

The Real California - in Three Dimensions
The book looks like it might just be a decorative coffee table item, but the content belies that impression. The pop-ups are fun and attractive, but the real story is in the choice of objects and the writing. The selections speak to the myth of California that was consciously created by early explorers, developers, and movie moguls but became its own reality as people migrated to the state ready to play the roles the myth-makers created for them. In exposing the history through objects and some remarkable writing by such as Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Carolyn See, Graham Nash, Alice Waters, Terry Gilliam, and Richard Rodriguez, the pre-mythic history and the development of a true California culture emerges...one in which the tinsel is a little tarnished around the edges, but glows as brightly as ever with its own special light.

California Pottery: From Missions to Modernism
Published in Hardcover by Chronicle Books (July, 2001)
Authors: Bill Stern and Peter Brenner
Average review score:

A Colorful look at California Pottery
This colorful and enjoyable book makes a strong case for the importance of California's commercial potteries in drawing on the state's unique cultural heritage to introduce dramatic new colors and styles to the United States. The book is easy to read and filled with interesting facts, with beautiful color photos on almost every page. I was fascinated by pictures of pottery from the 30's, side-by-side with the handmade folk pottery on which the designs werte based. This is a must for any serious pottery collector! Note that the book parallels an exhibition at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. The author, Bill Stern, was the curator for that exhbition.

California Real Estate Primer

THE ONLY WAY TO PASS THE CALIFORNIA SALESMAN EXAM!
This book is precise and to the point. The book is very well written, organized very well and has one object in mind - helping you to learn real estate rules and passing the salesman exam.

The Real Estate Primer is also an excellant tool for somebody who wants to improve their knowledge of real estate terminology, laws and procedures.

After each short chapter you will find questions which can easily be answered or you may choose, as I did, to fill in the answers and then study the question with the proper answer thereby reinforcing your understanding of the chapter.

I passed the exam the first time after reading through this book. I have used it many times since for review and to look up specific areas.

It is A MUST for anyone taking the sales exam.

California Real Estate Tax Auction Guide
If you are interested in investing in any type of real estate in the state of California, this book is a must! Ms. Green has done all the work for you. All you have to do is research the actual property you are interested in purchasing and place your bid at the auction.

This book represents countless hours of research. Why do this yourself when it is already done for you? I am very impressed with this book and have already started researching properties using the knowledge I have obtained. I can't wait until next years updated edition comes out!
